The Republic of Ireland
The Republic of Ireland occupies most of the island of Ireland that is situated off of the west coast of Great Britain. The countries are separated by the North Channel, the Irish Sea and St. George's Channel.
Nicknamed the Emerald Isle because of its lush and vibrant landscape, the people, too, are equally unique and vibrant. The culture, the music, the food, the drink, the sights and sounds are all uniquely "Irish". While there is green and life all around them, though, many Irishmen battle with hopelessness and depression.
According to Calvary Mission, Ireland is the least evangelized country in the English Speaking world.
Most people respond to that statement in disbelief. Yet, research indicates that Biblical Christians make up less than 1% of the population and that there are presently 50 towns with no evangelical church.
In a nation of nearly 5 million people, with such a historical reputation as the land of 'saints and scholars' it is difficult to understand how this can be the case.
Yet, on the ground the devotion to religion is waning, and secularism is rising. The Bible is a book that many have not read, and know very little about.
Because of the very limited numbers of true Gospel, Christ-worshiping witnesses in Ireland, many forms of Paganism, Witchcraft, Folk-Catholicism and a plethora of other sects are present.
Drunkenness is one of the major problems among the Irish, especially the men. This sin drowns them in despair, devastates families, impacts the community and destroys culture. Drunkenness needs to violence and sexual abuse toward women and children and it leaves men facedown in their own hopelessness and despair.
It is this hopelessness and despair that drive individuals toward things like suicide. Ireland has one of the highest suicide rates for males in the whole world, and the highest suicide rate for women in all of Europe.
We feel compelled to share our stories and the work of Jesus Christ in our own lives to encourage the Irish and point them to The Good Shepherd. The One from who all life flows, Jesus Christ.
In Ireland we plan to serve alongside our brothers and sisters as part of Calvary Mission.
